G3 School Outreach – Carriacou

Grenada Green Group School Outreach – Carriacou Visit Report

Attendees: Mandoo Seals, Ian Blaikie and Nichola Thomas

On Monday, May 26th, 2025, members of the Education Committee of the Grenada Green Group,
visited the tri-island state of Carriacou as part of our environmental awareness outreach.
Educational presentations were conducted at three schools: Hillsborough Government School ,
L’Esterre Primary School and the Harvey Vale Government School
The presentation focused on the following key topics:
• The dangers and environmental impact of littering
• Practical ways to reduce litter
• The importance of recycling
• The global benefits of proper waste management

At Hillsborough Government School, we engaged with the entire student body. At L’Esterre Primary
School, Nichola presented to a Grade 3 class. Despite the short notice, the session was lively,
engaging, and interactive. The students showed great enthusiasm and curiosity, and several
insightful questions were raised.

One notable discussion centered around the lack of color-coded bins at the schools or on the island,
which makes it challenging to teach proper waste separation. The students responded positively to
the idea of a wire recycling bin, expressing that it would help raise awareness and encourage better
disposal habits. They believed such a visual and creative solution would motivate others to recycle
more effectively.

This experience reaffirmed the importance of environmental education for all age groups. Not only
were the students actively engaged, but teachers also participated, offering feedback and sharing
their concerns. It was a strong reminder that environmental awareness starts with education and
that meaningful change often
